Making Your Baby Comfortable in the Summer Heat

By Jack Mash

There’s unquestionably something about babies and summer. It’s the time of year when they seem to blossom and bloom and have more energy and curiosity than ever. This can be a joyous season for babies and parents alike – as long as precautions are taken.

A comfortable baby is a happy baby – and a safe one.

The basics are pretty simple to understand but sometimes they can be overlooked amid the hustle and bustle of vacations, picnics, parties and other summertime family outings.

Making Your Baby Comfortable in the Summer Heat

First and foremost, infants and babies of all ages must constantly be kept hydrated. Make sure that they have plenty of fluids available to drink at all times – water being the best choice by far. And, naturally, since so many babies are fair-skinned, it’s wise to keep them out of direct sunlight and out of the sun altogether during the peak hours (late morning to early afternoon).

Sunscreen is, of course, a must, but doctors agree that it should not be overused in babies under the age of 6 months or so.

Also, babies haven’t yet developed the ability to perspire and they have a dangerous tendency to become overheated in a warm environment. Thus, it’s essential to refrain from leaving a little one in a warm room or (especially!) in a hot car. The sad truth is that this can threaten a baby’s very life.

Beyond the above commonsense tips, there are a wealth of products aimed squarely at babies and summer and here are a few that are sure to make the upcoming months as fun as possible for all concerned:
